Symbiotic Growth is a research project exploring co-design with mycelium and wool waste in the Basque context, developed in collaboration with the Basque BioDesign Center and awarded within the Cultural Moves program. The project investigates how local biological systems can generate situated design processes through material interaction and environmental conditions.
Mycelium grows without molds, interacting directly with wool fibres to produce emergent and non-deterministic material configurations. The growth process is partially translated into data through environmental sensors measuring temperature, humidity, and oxygen, creating a dialogue between biological continuity and computational interpretation.
Rather than reducing complexity, this approach highlights the tension between living systems and their measurement. The project frames design as an intra-active process where material, environment, and sensing technologies co-produce temporal and spatial outcomes within a specific ecological context.
